Diplômée de Billings championne des droits des gais nommée juge

(English follows) Diplômée de l’école secondaire H. S. Billings à Châteauguay, Cynthia Petersen a été nommée, cet été, juge de la Cour supérieure de l’Ontario. C’est une grande défenderesse des droits des minorités, particulièrement des gais et lesbiennes, qui accède à la magistrature à l’âge 52 ans. Avant sa nomination, Mme Petersen a agi comme avocate dans un cabinet ontarien pendant 22 ans. Elle était spécialisée dans le droit du travail, les droits de la personne et les contentieux fondés sur la Charte des droits et libertés. «Elle est réputée pour ses contributions à la lutte contre la discrimination fondée sur l'orientation sexuelle et l'identité de genre et est une figure importante dans les communautés LGBT du Canada», informe le Gouvernement du Canada dans un communiqué.

L’ancienne résidente de Châteauguay a aussi mené des enquêtes majeures sur des plaintes de harcèlement et siégé au comité d'enquête du Conseil canadien de la magistrature relativement à la conduite du juge Robin Camp en 2016. Elle a également animé des ateliers anti-homophobie de l'Institut national de la magistrature. [caption id="attachment_34316" align="alignnone" width="521"] Cynthia Petersen avec ses parents Micheline et Robert Petersen[/caption]   Fiers parents Ses parents, qui résident toujours à Châteauguay, sont évidemment très fiers d’elle. «Quand j’ai appris la nouvelle de sa nomination, mon cœur a presque éclaté de fierté, mais je n’étais pas surpris. Elle a toujours dépassé nos attentes», a réagi son père, Robert Petersen. Sa mère Micheline Petersen renchérit : «Étant sa maman, c'est facile pour moi de louanger Cynthia mais je crois sincèrement qu'elle sera une excellente juge car elle apporte à la Cour son intégrité,  sa compassion et son sens de la justice.  Elle sera un atout précieux pour la Cour Supérieure d'Ontario». Depuis l’enfance Selon Mme Petersen, sa fille s’est montrée sensible aux victimes de traitements injustes dès son plus jeune âge. «Cynthia a toujours défendu les personnes victimes de discrimination. Elle possède ces valeurs depuis toute petite. Quand elle entendait des propos racistes, elle les dénonçait toujours. Elle me disait : maman, si tu te tais, tu acceptes», se souvient-elle. Honorée par Billings Cynthia Petersen a laissé sa marque à l’école Billings où elle a terminé ses études secondaires en 1982. Son nom figure au tableau d’honneur de l’établissement. L’école l’a invitée à s’adresser aux finissants de 2013 qui recevaient leur diplôme. «Dans son discours, elle a lancé le message : si vous êtes témoins d’intimidation, parlez !» se souvient Micheline Petersen. Lors de son assermentation, elle s’est exprimée en quatre langues, anglais, français, italien et khmer. C’est la langue parlée au Cambodge. Elle y est allée souvent», a observé Mme Petersen.   • Nommée en 2014 par Justin Trudeau pour enquêter sur des allégations de harcèlement sexuel pesant sur deux députés. Son rapport d’enquête n’a pas été rendu public mais les députés en question ont été exclus du caucus libéral à la suite de la démarche.
  • A été conseillère en matière de harcèlement et de discrimination pour le Barreau du Haut-Canada de 2002 à 2017
  • A été professeure à l’Université d’Ottawa pendant cinq ans
  • Ses publications sur le racisme dans la sélection des jurés ont entraîné des changements dans le système de justice

Billings graduate and gay rights champion named judge

Michel Thibault Translation Dan Rosenburg Cynthia Petersen, a graduate of Howard S. Billings High School in Chateauguay, has been named an Ontario Superior Court judge this past summer. An active defender of minority rights, particularly gays and lesbians, she ascends to the magistrature at the age of 52. Prior to her nomination, Petersen acted as a lawyer in an Ontario law office for 22 years. She specialized in labour law, the rights of the person and litigations founded on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. «She is renowned for her work in combatting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and is a prominent figure within Canada's LGBT communities», the Government of Canada informs in a communique.

The former Chateauguay resident also conducted major inquiries on some harassment complaints and sat on the Canadian Council investigation committee of the magistrature relative to the conduct of Judge Robin Camp last year. She has also animated anti-homophobic workshops of the National Institute of the Magistrature. Proud parents Her parents, who still reside in Chateauguay, are evidently very proud of her. «When I heard the news that she was appointed a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice,  my heart almost burst with pride but I was not surprised as she has always exceeded our expectations.», reacted her father, Robert Petersen. Her mother, Micheline Petersen, went one better : «Being her mom, it's easy for me to praise Cynthia but I sincerely believe that she will be an excellent judge because she brings to the court her integrity, a compassion and her sense of justice. She will be a precious asset for the Superior Court of Ontario. » Since childhood According to Mrs. Petersen, her daughter has shown herself to be sensitive to the victims of unjust treatments from a very young age. « Cynthia has always defended people who were victims of discrimination. She has had these values since she was very small. Whenever she heard racist words, she would always denounce them. She used to tell me, 'Mama, if you stay quiet, it means you accept it, » her mother remembers. Honoured by Billings Cynthia Petersen left her mark on Billings High School where she finished her secondary studies in 1982. Her name appears on the honour board of that establishment. The school invited her to address the graduates of 2013 who were receiving their diplomas. « In her speech, she sent the message : ' If you are witnesses of indimidation, speak up!' » her mom recalls. Primary in French The daughter of a bilingual family, Cynthia did her primary studies in French in a Chateauguay school before completing her secondary schooling at Billings. « Her French is very good. At her swearing-in ceremony, she expressed herself in four languages : English, French, Italian and khmer, the language spoken in Cambodia. She has gone there often, » Mrs. Peterson observed.   • Named in 2014 by Justin Trudeau to investigate allegations of sexual harassment weighing against two MPs. Her report of the investigation was not rendered public but the MPs in question were excluded from the Liberal caucus as the result of the proceeding.
  • Has been a councillor in the matter of harassment and discrimination for the Upper Canada Bar from 2002 to 2017.
  • Has been a professor at the University of Ottawa for five years.
  • Her publications on racism in the selection of juries led to changes in the justice system.
