Corridor vert: la Ville de Châteauguay recule

(English follows) Les élus de Châteauguay ont annulé, le 17 juin, la résolution adoptée quelques mois plus tôt qui suggérait à la MRC de Roussillon de revoir les usages permis dans la zone du corridor vert Châteauguay-Léry. «La Ville reviendra à la MRC seulement si elle sent l’appui de la population», a fait savoir le maire Pierre-Paul Routhier. La résolution controversée demandait notamment à la MRC de permettre un taux de densification plus élevé dans certaines zones du corridor vert, ouvrant ainsi la porte à du développement résidentiel et récréatif à plus haute densité que ce qui est actuellement permis. De nombreux citoyens et groupes environnementalistes ont rapidement dénoncé ce projet en réclamant la protection intégrale du couvert forestier. Des consultations publiques sur le projet sont prévues dans les prochaines semaines. Les dates n’ont toutefois pas encore été annoncées.

Green belt: City backs off stand

Chateauguay elected officials on June 17 cancelled the resolution adopted a few months earlier that suggested that the MRC Roussillon take another look at the usages permitted in Chateauguay-Lery green belt zone. “The City will come back to the MRC only if it senses the support of the general population,” Mayor Pierre-Paul Routhier let it be known. The controversial resolution was notably asking the MRC to allow a rate of higher density in certain zones of the green belt, thus opening the door to residential and recreational development at a higher density than what is currently allowed. Numerous citizens and environmental groups quickly denounced this project by asking for the integral protection of the forest cover. Some public consultations on the project are foreseen in the coming weeks. The dates have not yet been announced. (Translation Dan Rosenburg)
