Mayor Pierre-Paul Routhier is calling for high-definition surveillance cameras to be installed at Chateauguay’s Maison des Jeunes. He formulated his request at the December 7th city council meeting following another occurrence of graffiti at the organization’s skate park. The modules had to be cleaned for a third time, lamented Lynda Proulx, Director of the Maison des Jeunes de Châteauguay. Surveillance cameras have been installed at the park, but they are not particularly useful, Mayor Routhier implied. “Since we began to see an infinite amount of graffiti, I asked for what was seen on the cameras to be revealed. It took a few weeks before we learned who actually received the images. It was neither the police, nor the Maison des Jeunes,” the mayor explained. It was the city’s IT department that had access to the images, he finally learned. According to the mayor, the police could not use them because they were “too dark.” That is why he made a plea for high-definition cameras that the Maison des Jeunes can access. A plague “The issue of this graffiti in Chateauguay is starting to become a plague. We need to be able to identify someone quickly,” the mayor insisted. (Translation Amanda Bennett)
