Multiple non-essential stores are going to be reopen on February 1st in Kahnawake, as planned when they were closed at the end of December, announced the Kahnawake COVID-19 Task Force, on January 26th. They will, however, have to close at 7:30 p.m. to respect the provincial curfew until it is lifted, even if this measure does not apply to members of the Kahnawake community on the territory. “This is being done to support healthcare establishments (overcrowding of hospitals), to help lower the overall impact of the pandemic (the number of cases in the surrounding communities), and to complement the province’s efforts in this regard”, reads a press release. The sale of tobacco products to non-locals also remains prohibited after 7:30 p.m. In house dining at restaurants, cigar lounges, bars, social clubs and gaming establishments will remain closed. Manufacturing businesses are permitted to resume operations on January 27th, in preparation of retail stores reopening in February. On January 21st , as per the Direction de santé publique de la Montérégie, Kahnawake had less than 5 active cases of COVID-19.
