Organic garbage collection will cost about $46 per household

Michel Thibault Translation Dan Rosenburg mthibault@gravitemedia.com The collection of table scraps, dead leaves and other organic residue will come to about $46 per door during the first year for the De Roussillon and Beauharnois-Salaberry MRCs. On the other hand, the bill for garbage burial is going to diminish. The citizens of 18 municipalities who form part of the territory will have access to a brown bin as of the fall of 2019. The materials picked up will be composted while awaiting for the putting into service of the biomethanisation projected by the two MRCs in Beauharnois. The Beauharnois-Salaberry MRC awarded to the Col Sel Transit Inc. enterprise off the Groupe TIRU the contract of collecting, transport and treatment of organic materials for an amount estimated at $1.7 million for the period dating from September 30, 2019 to September 29, 2020. The cost is approximate since the number of collections, units of occupation and tonnage are subjects to be confirmed, according to the pertinent resolution adopted by the mayors concerned. From its standpoint, the De Roussillon MRC granted the contract to Complex Enviro Connexions for a value estimated at $2.9 million for the same one-year period. ‘’This price varies according to the number of units of occupation that will be serviced and the quantity of the organic matter treated,’’ specifies MRC spokesperson Melanie Cloutier. The total of $4.6 million for the two MRCs, which includes 100,000 households, represents $46 per door. The final cost for the cities will be lower since the materials placed in the brown bin will not go to a burial site. That would require a tariff of over $100 per metric tonne. Composting at Lachute The content of the brown bins from citizens of the two MRCs will be treated at Lachue at a composting site authorized by the GSI Environnement firm, a ivision of Englobe. A certain quantity of compost produced will be redistributed to the citizens through the intervention of the ecocentres at periods to be determined, explains Guy Longtin, a spokesman for the Beauharnois-Salaberry MRC.
