Following recommendations made by a veterinarian, Châteauguay elected officials declared a dog “potentially dangerous” after it bit another dog. Their decision included a number of measures to be imposed on the dog’s owner. The aggression occurred within the municipality’s territory on March 25th and was reported to police. Following the intervention, the animal was assessed by a veterinarian who concluded that the level of danger the animal presented to other animals was 5/10. This level fell to 2/10 when it came to the danger presented to humans, but a caveat for small children was added as predatory behaviour could not be excluded, indicated the minutes of the April 19th municipal council meeting. Among others, the municipal council is obligating the dog’s owner to have the dog evaluated by a veterinarian that specializes in animal behaviour and to enroll in a canine education class, as well as ensure that the dog remains on a leash at least 1.25 m away from others and wears a basket muzzle. The dog’s vaccination for rabies must always be up to date and it must not frequent dog parks. Should the owner fail to comply, they will be subject to a fine. The council has authorized “enforcement staff or other agents of the City to make sporadic inspections to ensure compliance with the required conditions.” Translation Amanda Bennett
