Mobilization for new indoor pool in Chateauguay

Michel Thibault  Translation Dan Rosenburg mthibault@gravitemedia.com A movement in favour of a new indoor aquatic centre in Chateauguay is picking up steam. Such an infrastructure is part of the four common projects that Chateauguay and Beauharnois were counting on producing together. A multisport complex and an outdoor aquatic centre are on the path to becoming realities. The arrival to power of new elected officials in the two cities put into question the second phase consisting of an indoor swimming centre in Chateauguay and a fresh-air centre in Beauharnois. Karina Charpentier, a member of the Chateauguay Masters swimming club, started a petition on the internet with the ‘’goal of sensitizing our leaders to the importance of having a follow-up to the Chateauguay Sportplex and to pursue the project towards the construction of a new pool.’’ Charpentiers says that the Polydium is obsolete and no longer responds to the needs (of the population). While these lines were being written on June 27, the petition had gathered 292 signatures. Polydium out of date Michel Drouin, the president of Gestaforme, the group that manages the Polydium, supports the idea. He also approves the request for a $7.5 million grant by the Beau-Château Board from the provincial government to turn those plans into reality. ‘’This  subsidy would enable the construction of an indoor aquatic complex of 10 lanes at the corner of Brisebois and Rene Levesque boulevards, adjacent to the indoor soccer centre Sportplex,’’ he indicates in a press release. Drouin deplores the fact that the Polydium can no longer adequately fulfil its mission to improve the physical condition and the quality of life of people through its various activities. For a few years now, the indoor pool on Maple Blvd. is far from responding to the population’s needs. ‘’Currently, the lack of resources created by numerous problems, among other things, on the logistic level. The waiting list for private swimming lessons is currently two years long. The lack of swimming lanes affects the Masters swimming club, L’Aquaform and the (CAPC) Chateauguay Polydium Aquatic Club,’’ he explains. Drouin notes that the regional population is in a growth period. ‘’The pool and the Polydium infrastructures must welcome and respond to the needs of a regional population of over 77,367 citizens,’’ he emphasizes. Mayor agrees Chateauguay Mayor Pierre-Paul Routhier recognizes that the Polydium is obsolete and that a new indoor pool is a necessity. He is pressing Quebec to reply to the request from the Beau-Château Board for a grant.
