These days the City of Châteauguay and the Maison LePailleur are meeting to discuss conservation and development options for the Maison Moïse-Prégent, a heritage building in an advanced state of disrepair.

“Frankly, I don’t think we’re going to keep it standing,” said Châteauguay Mayor Eric Allard at the February council meeting. “But we want to try to find a way to highlight the heritage aspect of this house.”

For Karine Landerman, Director of the Maison LePailleur and the Société du Musée du Grand Châteauguay, it is important that there be a “trace” of this valuable heritage lot. “We understand that the house is not in a good state of conservation, but we can find ways to enhance and conserve heritage materials,” she explained. She cites as an example the Maison Gravel, located next to the Maison LePailleur. Unoccupied for many years, it was converted into a rest area and interpretation site in 2016.

The city owns the house located at 4 chemin de la Haute-Rivière. It is considered to be one of the oldest houses (1763) in the municipality. It has been boarded up for several years and is not maintained.

The barn located next to the residence caught fire last summer and a woman trapped inside died.
