Several suspicious forest fires in Kahnawake Translation Dan Rosenburg An estimated seven forest fires broke out on Kahnawake territory last week. Flames had to be brought under control by firefighters on Tuesday, May 7 at about 6 :30 p.m., near the Playground Poker Club at the border of Route 138. According to Kahnawake fire chief David Scott, 18 firemen were dispatched to the scenes. Then, overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, at 2:30 a.m., another blaze had to be extinguished by 10 firefighters on a golf course near Route 207. Scott reports that somebody intentionally set fire to the wooded area there. No one was injured during the course of these incidents. Near the Kahnawake Survival School, another wooded area was also set ablaze on Thursday, May 9 at about 2:20 p.m. Twenty-two firemen intervened. During the week, Scott indicates that around seven fires had to be put out. The Peacekeepers are still investigating. The Kahnawake fire department regularly holds sensitization campaigns with its residents at this time of the year so that people do not burn dead leaves when spring arrives, in order to reduce the risks of fire. “We are constantly reminding them of this,” Scott notes.
