Dan Rosenburg If the Chateauguay Junior Raiders went to Seaway Park in St. Lambert Sunday to win the Joe Pistilli Trophy, emblematic of Quebec Junior Football League supremacy, one wouldn't have guessed it by watching them perform in the first half. They looked like a shell of the team that won the championship just two short years ago as they trailed the South Shore Bruizers 14-0 at the half. But the Raiders looked like a completely different team in the second half, scoring 19 consecutive points in the third quarter to seize a 19-14 lead, capped by Jaylon Greaves' 42-yard touchdown pass reception from quarterback Mario Porreca. They fell behind 22-19 early in the fourth but stormed back and pulled out a gritty 33-29 victory in the last two minutes of play with two clutch touchdowns. Greaves pounced on a fumble in the end zone by teammate Serge Pilon with 1:55 remaining and Edwouard Valme scored on a pass interception 27 seconds later. The Bruizers added a meaningless major with 13 seconds left. All of which left fans to wonder what Raiders head coach Allan Ramsay had told his minions at halftime to transform them from chumps to champs. “I told them this is it,” Ramsay recalled later. “I said this is what you've been waiting for. So forget the first two quarters and don't let anyone take it away from you. “It was a quiet room and they got all fired up,” Ramsay continued. “I could tell in their eyes that they wanted it. I wasn't worried. They chipped away at it and we all saw the storybook ending.” The Raiders were led defensively by brilliant pass knockdowns by Valme and Alex Pilon; a resounding quarterback sack by Sanders Armand, and a fumble recovery by Johnny-on-the-spot Julian McLaren. Vincent Hamel was the best of the South Shore crew with two TDs, one on a coast-to-coast 115-yard return on a wide field-goal attempt and the other on a five-yard pass. Ryan Forest tallied the Raiders' first touchdown to instill his mates with hope.
