Sportplex en route to Chateauguay

Construction has begun on the sportplex projected for Chateauguay.

Work started through the machinery that was activated in recent days on the site near Louis-Philippe-Pare Secondary School where the complex will be built. Some pillars of cement found there have been demolished. Those structures were supposed to constitute the foundations of an indoor soccer centre that a private enterprise had never completed. They dated back to 2007.

The sportplex in the plans of the Beau-Chateau Intermunicipal Sport and Recreation Board and the City of Chateauguay, which has acquired the land concerned, is more elaborate. It consists of a main soccer field and a space where those adept at mini-hockey, handball, badminton and volleyball will alternate, according to the estimate in the call for bids. It will also house offices, dressing rooms, a hall, meeting places, a kitchen and toilets.

The Lambda-Lainco Consortium obtained the contract to produce the installation with a bid of $14.9 million in response to the call for bids. According to plan, the official opening will take place on September 17.

Four poles

The sportplex is part of four focuses of activities that the cities of Chateauguay and Beauharnois agreed to finalize together. An indoor aquatic centre planned for Chateauguay, as well as a complex of outdoor swimming pools and an outdoor base in Beauharnois are to come. All of this represents investments estimated at $49 million. The two cities involved are counting on part of the bill to be paid by the federal and provincial governments.
