The Bureau d’enquête indépendante (BEI) disclosed its investigation about a Peacekeepers’ intervention that took place on December 8 in Kahnawake and ended with the death of Gerald Alexander Marquis, 30 years old. The investigation reveals that a call was made to 911 at 6:30 P.M. by a relative indicating that the man was disorganized and was damaging his house. When police got to his residence, the door was open. They entered, announced their presence and went to the basement, where noises were coming from. Marquis was armed. He asked the agents to get out of his house. Once outside, the Peacekeepers called for backups and installed a security perimeter. They tried to communicate with the man by phone and in person, without any result. At 9 P.M. Marquis came out of his residence with his weapon pointed at officers, he shot multiple times and went back inside. He then came out again and entered a car in his parking 40 minutes later. Peacekeepers agents were trying to get closer when they heard a gunshot. The man had turned his weapon on himself. He was transported to the hospital where his decease was confirmed. Information shared at the time of the event indicated that the individual left his house in a car and came back before committing suicide. The final report was transmitted to the Directeur des poursuites criminelles et pénales (DPCP) and the coroner’s office on August 17. DPCP will determine if accusations should be placed against the officers implicated.
