Joseph Norton réélu par acclamation à Kahnawake

(English follows) N’ayant pas d’opposant, le grand chef de Kahnawake Joseph Tokwiro Norton a été réélu par acclamation le 1^er juin. Il y aura tout de même des élections le 7 juillet pour les onze postes de chefs du conseil de bande. Joseph Tokwiro Norton cumule 27 ans d’expérience à titre de grand chef du conseil de bande de la communauté autochtone de Kahnawake. Il a d’abord occupé ce poste de 1980 à 2004 avant de quitter la vie politique. Il s’était de nouveau présenté en 2015, élection qu’il a remporté devant le grand chef sortant Michael Delisle Jr et deux autres candidats. Cette fois-ci, il était le seul candidat en lice au poste de grand chef. Quant aux onze postes de chef de bande qui complètent le conseil, 25 personnes ont posé leur candidature. Huit des onze chefs sortants souhaitent poursuivre leur travail. L’ancien grand chef Michael Delisle Jr aspire à un des postes de chef. Ce dernier a confié au journal The Eastern Door à Kahnawake, qu’il était parfois plus facile de se concentrer sur certains projets en tant que chef plutôt que grand chef. «Selon ce que j’ai appris dans mes six premières années versus les onze dernières comme grand chef, je crois que je peux être plus utile dans le rôle de membre du conseil», a-t-il mentionné à l’hebdomadaire mohawk.

Joe Norton re-elected by acclamation in Kahnawake

Having no opposition, Kahnawake Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton was re-elected by acclamation on June 1. But there will be elections just the same on July 7 for the 11 chiefs’ positions on the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake. Norton accumulated 27 years of experience as MCK Grand Chief of the aboriginal community of Kahnawake. He first occupied this post from 1980 to 2004 before quitting political life. He presented himself again in 2015 in an election he won over Incumbent Grand Chief Mike Delisle Jr. and two other candidates. But this year he was the only candidate in the running for the Grand Chief’s job. As for the other 11 MCK seats that complete the council, 25 people posted their candidature. Eight of the 11 exiting chiefs wished to continue their work and Delisle aspired to one of the spots. The latter confided to Kahnawake journal The Eastern Door that it was sometimes easier to concentrate on certain projects as a chief rather than as Grand Chief.   ‘’According to what I learned in my first six years as against my last 11 years as Grand Chief, I believe that I can be more useful in the role as a council member,’’ he told the Mohawk weekly newspaper.
