Nathalie Simon, the candidate for Citizens' Action, believes that Châteauguay is no longer the peaceful suburb it once was. She believes that her party has a program that will help stop the crime and vandalism that have been rampant for some time.

"In Châteauguay, over the past few years, we have noticed the return of graffiti and the famous shoes hanging from power lines, which are signs of a new presence. There are sometimes coded messages in the tags that are quite disturbing, such as calls for violence against police forces," says Ms. Simon.

In the past four years, there has also been a murder in Parc de la Commune, some gun shots and a shooting in the municipality," said the mayoral candidate.

According to her, this trend shows that there are things that citizens do not want to see and that are gradually taking hold in the City. The former mayor does not want to cloud the issue, she knows that the geographical location of Châteauguay facing Montreal puts the municipality in a delicate situation; it can become a potential ground for malicious individuals.

Concerns and solutions

"During door-to-door visits, people tell us that they are afraid and that they are more apprehensive than before; the feeling of insecurity has grown and we will have to monitor this closely," she says.

As a solution to this uncertain situation, the candidate wants to bring back the social development policy that was adopted before the 2017 municipal elections. This policy is intended as a way to understand how to live together and to see what non-repressive tools can help solve social issues.

"We are also going to propose a series of actions and collaborations with people from community organizations because they are ones who work in the field and who are able to help us identify certain problems," concludes Nathalie Simon.
