Darryl King has been passionate about working with youth since he started coaching basketball at Howard S Billings high school in Chateauguay, in 2004. He stayed involved in the community since then. This summer, he decided to launch the South shore youth organization to make an impact on the lives of young people in the area. ”During the Pandemic, something happened. The energy of the Black Lives Matter movement and self-reflection pushed me to follow a dream I have had for a long time. A dream that I had pushed aside for too long”, King explains on the organization’s Facebook page. He says that he was always either too busy or not sure how and where to begin. He then decided that “it was no longer time to just talk about it”, so he consulted with some closed friends and they formed the South shore youth organization. Their specific mission is to develop youth through education, service learning and sport to become lifelong leaders in their communities. The South shore youth organization will provide resources such as academic assistance, early literacy, financial literacy, and many other resources to the youth and their families in the community, King details. https://www.facebook.com/ssyouthorg/videos/1994821340667449/?__tn__=%2Cd%2CP-R&eid=ARBn2TTn5KA5H9u5cwWPqbbcY9NHG80MWb25ZjQNUWLi2i4pfYM4x7Hawa2LcOra3svEK65cFnZlNOsj An inaugural event for the organization occurred earlier in August with the Concordia University women’s basketball head coach, Tenicha Gittens. She visited a group of girls to talk about dedication, passion and her own successes. Food Drive The organization will have a food drive for the Chateauguay food bank on August 30 at the rear parking lot of Howard S Billings High School, near the basketball courts from 9 A.M. to noon. People can bring any nonperishable food donations, such as canned meats, beans, fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, rice, pasta, floor or sugar. The organization can be contacted by anyone who would want to volunteer, on Facebook or Instagram’s pages named ssyouthorg or by email at ssyouthorg@gmail.com.
