Director of the Chateauguay police department for 10 years, Stephane Fleury will be leaving those duties in November to take up a new challenge with the Quebec Municipalities Union (UMQ). M. Fleury says he is leaving the Chateauguay police service with the feeling of mission accomplished. He went through several rebounds during his time in Chateauguay. Notably, he experienced the ''sheriff`s episode'' during the negotiation of the collective bargaining agreement with the police union in 2014. As an attemped pressure tactic, the police patrolled while wearing sheriff`s uniforms. That event received plenty of media publicity. In 2017, Fleury had to handle the defusing of the police service on Mercier territory when that town decided to create its own police force. He says he is proud of his team`s results in recent years. ''We lowered the rate of criminal activity, decreased the number of accidents, and implemented several prevention programs, while receiving recognition prizes'', he enumerated. ''We are the only 911 service having received all the conformity certificates since the putting in place of the 911 centres regulation was installed.'' As of November 30, Fleury will be working as a public works-safety relations counsellor for the UMQ. As for who will direct the Chateauguay police team, the City indicates that the recruiting process is under way.``If the City wishes to replace me internally, I have developed a potential plan. But I cannot comment about their intentions on this subject,`` he noted. (Translation Dan Rosenburg)
