Des drapeaux autochtones tolérés au pont Mercier

(English follows)Le ministère des Transports du Québec tolère «temporairement» des drapeaux autochtones installés sur la partie provinciale du pont Mercier.

Une quinzaine de drapeaux iroquois et de la Mohawk Warrior Society sont visibles sur le pont en direction de la Rive-Sud. Selon Martin Girard, du ministère des Transports (MTQ), ils ont été installés le 21 juin, à l’occasion de la Journée nationale des Autochtones. «Ils sont tolérés temporairement. Ils devraient être enlevés le  10 juillet, après le pow-wow de Kahnawake (prévu les 8 et 9)», explique-t-il.

Selon nos informations, ces drapeaux seraient l’initiative du Mohawk bridge consortium. L’entreprise n’a toutefois pas répondu à notre demande d’entrevue.

Le MTQ n’était pas en mesure de confirmer si une permission lui a été demandée avant l’installation des symboles. «Des vérifications ont été faites du côté du Ministère, souligne M. Girard. Nous nous sommes assurés que ce n’était pas dangereux pour la circulation.» 

Aboriginal flags tolerated on Mercier Bridge 

The Quebec Transport Minister is « temporarily » tolerating the aboriginal flags installed on the provincial part of the Mercier Bridge.

About 15 Iroquois and Mohawk Warrior Society flags are visible on the bridge in the direction of the South Shore. According to Martin Girard of the Transport Ministry (MTQ), they were installed on June 21 on the occasion of National Aboriginal Day. « They are being tolerated temporarily. They should be removed on July 10, after the (Echoes of a Proud Nation) Pow-wow in Kahnawake (scheduled for July 8 and 9), » he explains.

According to our information, these flags would be the initiative of the Mohawk Bridge Consortium. However, the enterprise did not reply to our demand for an interview.

The MTQ was not in a position to confirm if it had been asked for permission before these symbols were installed. « Verifications were made with the Ministry, » Girard emphasized. « We have been assured that it was not dangerous for traffic. » (Translation Dan Rosenburg)
