An investigation has been launched following the discovery of three dead squirrels found close to one another in a hedge in Chateauguay on May 12. Some suspect poisoning. Translation Courtesy Amanda Bennett The Chateauguay police confirmed to the newspaper that they had received a complaint regarding dead animals around Maheu and Dubois streets. “Procedures are underway. So as not to interfere with the investigation, we will not be providing any additional details at the moment,” stated officer Nadia Grondin. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks, Sylvain Carrier, shared: “About the three dead squirrels found this week, a file has been opened by the regional wildlife protection office. A number of tests are underway.’ Dozens of Dead Squirrels According to someone who works in the sector, the phenomenon began in 2018. In five years, she and residents in the neighbourhood have found hundreds of dead squirrels, dozens of skunks and a racoon, she stated. Some believed that an individual was leaving poison out within their reach, but there is no proof of that theory. ‘Wildlife protection officers from the Valleyfield office did in fact process a file in the same neighbourhood in 2018 and met with a person who was targeted as a suspect. There was no evidence that any type of poison had been used at the time,’ stated the spokesperson from the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks.
