Le choix des noms mohawks

(English follows )Lorsqu’un bébé naît dans la communauté de Kahnawake, on lui attribuera généralement au moins deux noms. Un en anglais et un en mohawk. Chaque nom mohawk a une signification personnalisée pour l’enfant.

Kelliann, Melissa et Emily Frate ont respectivement choisi les prénoms de Dominic, Mila et Ietsi’tsatenníharons pour leurs bébés. Pourquoi certains en anglais et d’autres en mohawk ? «C’est juste un choix. Ici à Kahnawake, certains utilisent (le nom mohawk) comme prénom, d’autres celui en anglais», explique Emily. J’aime appeler mes enfants par le nom mohawk.»

Ses deux sœurs préfèrent utiliser le nom anglais. «C’est plus facile pour bien des gens», explique Melissa. Leurs enfants ont tout de même un deuxième nom autochtone. Le choix de ce nom n’est pas anodin. Il doit faire partie d’une liste du clan familial. «Quelqu’un qui fait partie du clan des ours ne choisira pas un nom du clan des loups», illustre la grand-mère des nouveau-nés Tammy Standup.

Deux de ses filles lui ont d’ailleurs demandé de leur ‘’offrir’’ un nom mohawk pour leur enfant. Comment fait-on? «Tu regardes la situation, comment les parents se sentent ou ce qui se passe. Le nom devient la signification de ça», explique Mme Standup. Par exemple, elle a offert le nom Rokarakehte pour le fils de Kelliann. «Les parents s’intéressent beaucoup aux légendes, à l’histoire. Ce nom veut dire : il transporte la légende.»

Emily souhaitait que le prénom ait rapport aux fleurs. Ietsi’tsatenníharons signifie : elle attache les fleurs ensemble.

Quant à Melissa, elle et son conjoint ont consulté le livre de noms disponibles au centre culturel de Kahnawake. Lorsqu’une personne choisit un nom dans le livre, ce dernier est retiré de la liste. Pour la petite Mila, les parents ont choisi Iawentase qui signifie : elle a un nouveau jour.

The choice of Mohawk names

When a baby is born in the Kahnawake community, it is usually attributed with two names : one in English and one in Mohawk. Each Mohawk name has a personalized significance for the child.

Kelliann, Melissa et Emily Frate respectively chose the first names of Dominic, Mila and Ietsi'tsatenniharons for their newborns. Why are some in English and the other in Mohawk? «It’s just a choice in Kahnawake. Some use (Mohawk) as their first names and some use English,” Emily explains. “I like calling them by their Mohawk name.» Her two sisters prefer using the English name. «It’s easier for a lot of people,» Melissa says. Their children just the same all have a second Aboriginal name. The choice of this name is not insignificant. It must be part of a list of the family clan. “Someone who is part of the Bear Clan will not choose a name from the Wolf Clan,” explains Tammy Standup, the grandmother of the newborns.

Moreover, two of her daughters asked her to « offer » a Mohawk name for their child. How does one do that?  «You look at the situation, how the parents are feeling, or what is going on. It becomes the meaning of that», Standup explains. For example, she offered the name of Rokarakehte for the son of Kelliann. « The parents are very interested in legends and in history. This name means 'he carries the legend'. »  Emily wished that the first name had a rapport with flowers. Ietsi’tsatenníharons signifies 'she strings flower together.' As for  Melissa, she and her spouse consulted a book of names available at the Kahnawake Cultural Centre. When a person selects a name from this book, that name is removed from the list. For little Mila, the parents chose Iawentase which means 'she has a new day.'
