MP Brenda Shanahan has been the victim of hate vandalism of late with a swastika drawn on one of her campaign posters and the word “killer” written on the door of her riding office in Châteauguay.

“These actions are unacceptable in our society and must be condemned,” said the Liberal who thinks these are the misguided actions of young people.

The incumbent, who is seeking another mandate from the federal elections in September, hopes nonetheless that her opponents in the Châteauguay-Lacolle riding will join their voices to her in condemnation of the situation. “It’s a form of intimidation that affects everyone and it has no place here. There is always a campaign sign battle, but it has to be done with respect,” she added.

A surprise

It was upon their return from lunch on Wednesday, August 25th that her employees noticed a vandalized campaign sign close to their riding office and a word etched in black on the office window. Another of the campaign signs in Châteauguay was also vandalized, as well as yet another in Léry. On the latter, a penis was drawn on the photo of incumbent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. A swastika was also drawn on his face. Ms. Shanahan file a complaint with Châteauguay Police. She added that her staff no longer feel safe.

However, people are being received by appointment only and security measures are in place. The MP and candidate condemns the anti-semitic and anti-democratic actions. Electors have the right to disagree with her or with the Liberal Party, but they must remain respectful, including when it comes time to vote.

The sign located in Léry is in a field. Someone would have to stop specifically to vandalise it, lamented the outgoing MP. (Photo : Courtesy)
