Oka et Kanesatake entreprennent une réconciliation

(English follows)Ceux qui craignaient que le conflit entre le maire d’Oka et le grand chef de Kanesatake entraîne un nouveau blocage du pont Mercier peuvent se rassurer. Les deux hommes ont entrepris une démarche de réconciliation lors du Sommet des Premières Nations et des municipalités le 30 août. Les tensions avaient monté entre les deux élus cet été. Le maire d’Oka Pascal Quévillon s’oppose au projet d’un promoteur de transférer aux Mohawks des terres lui appartenant. M. Quévillon avait dit craindre d’être enclavé par Kanesatake et entouré «de cabanes à cigarettes et de cabanes à pot». Il a présenté des excuses au grand chef Serge Otsi Simon pour ces propos lors du sommet. Les deux élus ont indiqué qu’ils travailleront ensemble pour leurs communautés respectives. En 1990, un conflit entre ces deux territoires avait occasionné le blocage du pont Mercier pendant plusieurs semaines.

Oka, Kanesatake undertake a reconciliation

Those who feared that the conflict between the Oka Mayor and the Grand Chief of Kanesatake would start a new blockade of the Mercier Bridge can reassure themselves. The two men undertook a step of reconciliation at the Summit of First Nations and municipalities on August 30. The tensions had mounted between the two elected officials this summer. Oka Mayor Pascal Quevillon opposed a promoter’s project to transfer to the Mohawks lands belonging to Oka. Quevillon had said he feared being hemmed in by Kanesatake and surrounded ‘’by cigarette shops and pot cabins.’’ He present apologies to Grand Chief Serge Otsi Simon for these words he uttered at the summit. The two elected officials indicated that they will work together for their respective communities.
