As the election campaign draws to a close, Martin Bécotte, candidate for Québec solidaire, believes that the Liberal Party and the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) have taken the citizens of the Châteauguay riding for granted over the past few years.

“It is now time to break this cycle of indifference from Quebec regarding the challenges and issues we have in our communities in Mercier, Léry, Saint-Isidore, Châteauguay and Kahnawake,” said Martin Bécotte.

Despite the presence of a member of the government almost continuously for 20 years, the QS candidate condemns the Liberal and Caquist governments for not taking the issues in the riding seriously.

“No one remembers seeing a prime minister pass through here outside of election campaigns,” he said.

Neglected issues

Among the issues to be addressed, Mr. Bécotte is concerned about the low level of funding for l’Élan des jeunes, a shelter for young people at risk of or experiencing homeless in the Montérégie-Ouest region.

“Our auberge du cœur, which is located in the most populous MRC in Quebec, has housed hundreds of struggling youths since 2011. It receives only one third of the funding allocated to the mission of other auberges du coeur in Montérégie,” he decried.

The candidate took the opportunity once again to condemn the lack of concrete action in the file of the Mercier lagoons and accuses the Liberals and the CAQ of having trivialized the situation.

“In the riding we are facing one of the worst ecological disasters in Canada. The contamination of the groundwater in Mercier affects our economy, our property tax account and possibly our health,” he said, in conclusion.
