50e de H. S. Billings : 1968, une année «survoltée»

(English follows) L’école H. S. Billings a vu le jour durant une période de grands remous sur la planète. L’année 1968 a entre autres été marquée par l’assassinat de Martin Luther King et Robert Kennedy aux États-Unis; la guerre du Vietnam, l’invasion de l’ancienne Tchécoslovaquie par l’ex-URSS ainsi que les révoltes étudiantes à Paris, Mexico et Berlin, rappelle Actualités UQAM dans un article coiffé du titre «1968, une année survoltée» paru en janvier. Le mouvement féministe a aussi réalisé un coup d’éclat en perturbant, en septembre, le concours de beauté Miss America dans un casino d’Atlantic City. Les participantes avaient alors jeté soutien-gorge et maquillage aux poubelles pour exprimer leur refus de réduire les femmes à leur apparence physique.

The year 1968 among other things was marked by the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy in the United States; the Vietnam war; the invasion of the former Czechoslovakia by the ex-Soviet Union, as well as student revolts in Paris, Mexico and Berlin, reminds Actualites UQAM in a January article headed by the title ‘’1968, an electrifying year.’’ The feminist movement also realized a glorious deed by disrupting the Miss America beauty pageant in an Atlantic City casino in September. The participants had then thrown their bras and makeup into the garbage to express their refusal to reduce women to their physical appearances.
