The City of Châteauguay is building a new park behind the Georges-P.-Vanier Cultural Centre this October. The cost of the work is estimated at close to $800,000, according to the municipality. The manufacturing company in Châteauguay, CMP, will invest an amount of approximately $500,000.

By the end of the work, there will be a stage area for performances. There will also be urban furniture for families, such as picnic tables, deckchairs and more.

There will be a lot of vegetation and a pedestrian path made of stone dust connecting the parking lot and the G. P. Vanier Cultural Centre. The park will be named the 350th CMP Park in honour of the City’s anniversary.

“It is an ideal location for a park, but more importantly, it is strategic. The land is close to the Agora, the skate park and the library. So, we invite people to use it, to be around it,” said Mayor Eric Allard.

He added that the land isn’t currently well known by the people of Chateauguay, even though it is located close to the city core.

This project will allow the population to get to know it through future shows, such as those that will be held as part of the city’s 350th anniversary, but also through its future picnic area. These developments will make it possible for Châteauguay to celebrate the Fête nationale du Québec.

The park will also be connected to the linear project, a green line where the line’s electric poles will be completely dismantled at the end of the fall to improve sustainable mobility.

The city will provide more than $300,000 for electrical and sanitary installations.

Project Phases

The future park will be built in two phases. Phase 1 will include the urban development, including the performance spaces, which will be completed by June.

Phase 2 will be reserved for the “remaining greenery”, such as the lawn or small shrubs, which will be planted by October, said the Mayor. He considers those to be the “final finishing touches” before citizens can “fully” enjoy the park. A roof for the stage area will also be built.

“We’ve been doing business with Châteauguay for over 50 years. We are proud to be a partner in this project and to offer a park to the citizens,” said Steve Zimmermann, President and CEO of CMP.
