Elle va défendre l’honneur du Canada en Italie

(English follows) La joueuse de rugby Shawna Brayton, de Châteauguay, a été sélectionnée pour représenter le Canada à la FISU 2019, une compétition internationale réunissant les meilleures joueuses universitaires de rugby à sept. L’athlète de 21 ans évolue au sein  de l’équipe de l’Université Concordia, à Montréal, où elle poursuit ses études depuis deux ans. Elle se dit très fébrile à l’idée de représenter le Canada pour cette compétition. «J’ai mis beaucoup d’efforts pour y arriver», commente-t-elle en précisant que chaque qualification pour un événement du genre demande beaucoup de travail. «C’est la quatrième fois de ma carrière que j’aurai l’occasion de représenter le Canada dans une compétition internationale», mentionne-t-elle. (Photo: Gracieuseté, Kyran Thicke/Université Concordia)[/caption] Le tournoi FISU 2019 se tiendra à Napoli, en Italie, du 3 au 14 juillet. Près de 9 300 athlètes provenant de 220 pays y participent. La jeune femme ne sait pas encore quelle position elle occupera dans l’équipe. À l’Université Concordia, elle joue à l’avant. L’athlète a commencé sa carrière de rugby dans l’équipe de l’école secondaire Howard S. Billings de Châteauguay. Depuis, l’un de ses objectifs est d’être sélectionnée dans l’équipe canadienne pour les Jeux olympiques de Tokyo, en 2020. Elle aspire également à la Coupe du monde de rugby. À ce jour, elle a représenté le Canada dans trois tournois d’envergure internationale : aux Jeux du Commonwealth, à Apia (Samoa) en septembre 2015, au U20 England Tour en août 2016 (Angleterre), et au U20 Can-Am (Ottawa) en août 2017. Elle avait reçu le titre «d’athlète féminine de l’année» de la Société Saint-Patrick de Montréal (Erin’s Sports Association) en 2017.

The 21-year-old athlete plays for the Concordia University team in Montreal where she has been pursuing her studies for the past two years. She says she is very excited at the idea of representing Canada at this competition. ‘’I have put a lot of effort into getting there,’’ she comments, specifying that each qualification of this type demands lots of hard work. ‘’This is the fourth time in my career that I will have the chance to represent Canada in an international competition,’’ she notes. The 2019 international competition will be held in Napoli, Italy from July 3-14. Close to 9,300 athletes from 220 countries will participate in it. Brayton does not yet know what position she will play on the team. At Concordia, she is a forward. The athlete began her rugby career on the Howard S. Billings High School squad in Chateauguay. Since then, one of her goals was to be chosen on the Canadian team for the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. She also aspires to play in the World Rugby Cup. Up to now she has played in the Commonwealth Games in Apia (Samoa) in September of 2015; in the U20 England Tour in August of 2016 (in England), and in the U20 Can-Am competition in Ottawa in August of 2017. She received the title of ‘’female athlete–of-the-year’’ from the Erin Sports Association in Montreal in 2017.
