The Châteauguay Police Department has arrested Sandrine Allard Girardot in connection with the wave of hateful graffiti in Châteauguay in recent weeks. The 23-year-old Châteauguay woman faces charges of public incitement to hatred and willfully promoting hate.

The young woman appeared in court in Valleyfield on Thursday. She was released on her own recognizance under conditions, the police said in a press release.

The police department launched an investigation in February after hate graffiti appeared in the Châteauguay area. Places of worship, schools and businesses were targeted by the graffiti, which included swastikas and racist messages.

“More than 16 files have been opened in connection with these offences,” said the Châteauguay Police Department. “The Sûreté du Québec also contributed to the investigation with the expertise of a profiler for behavioural analysis.”

The city and several of the merchants affected had denounced these acts. The police department would like to thank the citizens who alerted them to these crimes. “Information from the public is an important contribution to the initiation of police investigations,” he said.
