Mario Porreca joueur par excellence des Raiders de Châteauguay

(English follows - selon un texte de Dan Rosenburg) Mario Porreca termine sa carrière avec les Raiders junior de Châteauguay avec le titre de joueur par excellence. Le quart arrière a reçu ce trophée lors du banquet annuel de l’équipe, le samedi 24 février, au restaurant Robbie’s Smokehouse à Kahnawake. Reste à voir qui succèdera à ce joueur «qui a porté l’équipe sur son dos et l’a menée au championnat deux années de suite» pour reprendre les mots de l’entraîneur chef Allan Ramsay. Évaluant les possibilités, celui-ci a fait part : «Nous pensons à Brian Harwood, le réserviste qui a beaucoup appris sous l’aile de Mario la saison dernière. Il y a aussi deux ou trois prospects qui pourraient se présenter au camp d’entraînement». Ramsay a indiqué aux invités que l’édition 2017 des Raiders figurait dans le top 3 des équipes qu’il ait jamais coachées. «Il n’y avait pas de dissensions dans notre groupe. Après avoir trébuché devant les Bruizers de la Rive-Sud dans la partie de championnat, vous avez rebondi et joué intensément jusqu’au dernier coup de sifflet», a rappelé Ramsay à ses protégés. En novembre, les Raiders ont gagné la coupe Joe Pistilli récompensant les champions de la Ligue de football junior du Québec en battant les Bruizers 33 à 29 après avoir tiré de l’arrière 14 à 0 à la mi-temps. Outre Porreca, 11 autres joueurs de l’équipe ont été récompensés. Sanders Armand a été désigné joueur défensif par excellence; Danny Mancini joueur offensif par excellence; Ritchie Vernet joueur par excellence de la ligne défensive; Corey Sim-Robertson joueur par excellence de la ligne offensive; Brandon Parent, meilleure recrue offensive; Jeverson Pierre-Victor meilleure recrue défensive; Edwouard Valme, joueur le plus amélioré, et Serge Pilon, meilleur joueur des unités spéciales. Ryan Forrest a obtenu le prix Iron Man et Brandon Hart le prix des entraîneurs. Tom Webster a gagné le prix Don Noonan décerné au bénévole de l’année. Il se retire après avoir secondé Nick Iannucilli pendant trois ans. Le président de l’équipe, John Mouland, a obtenu en 2017 sa neuvième bague de championnat de football en carrière. Il a gagné sa toute première à titre de joueur avec les Ramblers de Châteauguay en 1961. Les Raiders tiennent un camp d’essai intérieur au Soccer Plex à Lachine, le samedi 3 mars, de 19h à 20h30. Des camps d’essai sont aussi prévus en avril et mai avant le camp principal en juin.

Porreca ends junior football career with Raiders' MVP season

Dan Rosenburg Who will take over the Chateauguay Junior Raiders' quarterback duties from Most Valuable Player Mario Porreca next season after he “put the team on his back and led it to the championship in two of the last two seasons,” in the words of head coach Allan Ramsay. That's precisely what most players, coaches and spectators were wondering last Saturday after Porecca walked off with MVP honours at the club's annual awards banquet at Robbie's Smoke House in Kahnawake. Porreca is just one of 10 players the Raiders lose through overage next campaign. “We'll look at Brian Harwood, the backup who learned while under Mario's wing last season,” Ramsay confided. “There are also two or three prospects who might show up at training  camp,” he added. The Raiders will hold an indoor tryout camp at the Lachine Soccer Plex this Saturday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There will also be two tryout camps in April and one in May prior to the main camp in June. “The 2017 team is one of the top three I've ever coached,” Ramsay told the banquet attendees. “There was no dissension among us. After falling behind the South Shore Bruizers in the championship game, you guys came back and played hard to the last whistle,” Ramsay addressed his proteges. Other award winners Saturday were defensive MVP Sanders Armand; offensive MVP Danny Mancini; defensive line MVP Ritchie Vernet; O-line MVP Corey Sim-Robertson; best offensive rookie Brandon Parent; best defensive rookie Jeverson Pierre-Victor; most improved player Edwouard Valme; top special teams player Serge Pilon; Iron Man Award Ryan Forest and coaches' award winner Brandon Hart. The Don Noonan award to the outstanding volunteer went this year to Tom Webster, who is retiring after three years as assistant to Nick Iannucilli. And team president John Mouland earned deserved attention for modelling the nine championship football rings he has earned as a player, coach and management figure since he first won one as a player with the Chateauguay Ramblers in 1961.
