In the wake of several attacks by dogs that weren’t on a leash recently, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) had to remind the Community of penalties for loose dogs, on August 5. This past weekend, a young boy was attacked and bitten while walking his puppy on a leash. Also recently, a half pitbull attacked and severely injured a mini poodle on a leash being walked by a little boy and his grandmother. They suffered scrapes and bruises during the attack. In addition, a woman reported being threatened by loose dogs while walking on two occasions in July, as per the MCK. “In the past couple of years, we have seen a huge increase in responsible pet ownership, but recently we have seen a noticeable increase in loose dogs”, affirms Frankie McComber, lead on the Public Safety Portfolio. He adds that “it’s easy to blame the dogs for their actions, but the reality is this problem could by addressed by dog owners by simply keeping their pets properly restrained”.
