On Thursday, the Châteauguay Police Department reminded residents that its officers are present on the snowmobile trails in the area they serve, which includes Châteauguay, Beauharnois, Léry and Saint-Isidore. Snowmobile officers are paying particular attention to those driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, using excessive speed and are ensuring compliance with mandatory stops at intersections with other trails and public road crossings. “The police presence aims to create awareness about safe and responsible behaviours,” underscored Officer Jenny Lavigne via press release. The Châteauguay Police remind the public that the maximum speed limit on trails is 70km/hr and that, barring exceptions which include designated locations with signage, using public roads while on a snowmobile is prohibited.  Tips Police advise snowmobile users to keep to dedicated trails and avoid bodies of water. They also recommend that users avoid going out alone and encourage them to inform family or friends of their itinerary before heading out. Roussillon The police department is currently using snowmobiles rented from the Régie intermunicipale de Roussillon. In December, city council earmarked a maximum budget of $51,000 to eventually acquire two machines and a trailer. (Translation Amanda Bennett)
