The partners would like to find a name that would take into account the historic partnership between the community of Châteauguay and the Mohawk Nation of Kahnawake, as well as the connection with the building’s new mission.

Recall that their project seeks to convert the motel into 31 studio apartments for people at risk of homelessness by the end of the year. In the meantime, they say they are facing several challenges including a shortage of materials and labourers which are contributing to increased costs.

They were, however, pleased to announce that “some progress has been made, including the project’s approval by the municipality.”

When contacted, Martine Boyer, the communications coordinator for the Fédération régionale des OSBL d’habitation de la Montérégie et de l’Estrie (FROHME), explained that the deadline would be respected on the whole.

“Eighty percent of the units should be ready for the end of 2022. After the construction holiday, we may have to backtrack on a few of the budgetary choices, but it should be quite minimal,” she said.

In addition to FROHME, the Mohawk community and the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de la Montérégie-Ouest are the two other partners in the project.
