The Kahnawake community will go to the polls on July 3rd for the Mohawk Council elections. Five candidates aspire to the position of Grand Chief.

The electoral officer released the list of candidates on June 4th. The five nominees for the position of Grand Chief are Gina Deer, Sterling Deer, Frankie ‘Fafa’ Mccomber, Keith Kanenharoton Myiow and Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer.

The seat has been vacant since the sudden death of Joseph Tokwiro Norton in August 2020. Norton served as Grand Chief for 27 years, from 1982 to 2004, and from 2015 until his death.

Twenty candidates are running for the eleven Council Chief positions available.
